Year in review
The Player Development program funded by the great success of the Fall Dance and Novice Tournament in December was able to provide great player development programs on and off the ice following Alberta and Hockey Canada's Long Term Player Development program.
-Smytts Skills, Tasz, Base and P2 Power Skating delivered over 40 hours of on ice instruction for players Initiation to Bantam.
-Gold in The Net delivered over 10 hours of on ice instruction for our young goalies from Novice to Bantam at no cost to goalies.
With Player and Coach Development teaming up, we held several clinics on and off the ice.
-Building Defense Men and Small Area Skills clinics at start of year.
-Brandon Hockey was out with Atom parents and players for the importance of properly fitting equipment to prevent injuries
-Brain Care Centre presented a concussion Management seminar for parents on signs/symptoms and how to manage a concussion.
The initiation program took on some changes in the last few years. The new half ice boards purchased in 2015/16 season and teams playing half ice games was a great success and will expand across Alberta/Canada in the next few years. I would like to thank all the initiation coaches for there hard work over the last 2 years. SPMHA initiation program is growing every year and is in high regards with Hockey Alberta.
As my 2 years is up, I would like to thank all the parents and coaches of our young athletes for making these programs a success and for the great friends I have made along the way. Without your passion for the game the Player Development program could not run. To the SPMHA executive thanks for all the help over the last few years making my job easier. As a hockey parent of 3 I would like to thank the executive for all the long hours and professionalism put in to make the hockey season a great enjoyment for my family. Last but not least I would like to thanks all the players, the enthusiasm and love of hockey over the years has shown me why we play the greatest game on earth.
Thanks Laine Davis

Stony Plain Minor Hockey has adopted and is excited to be adhering to Hockey Alberta & Hockey Canada's Long Term Player Development. This was derived from the Canadian Sport For Life - Long Term Athlete Development model. It is recommended that all parents, coaches, and players go to the link bellow and review the few key points.
Simply put, a Long Term Player Development model (LTPD) is a framework to maximize a player’s potential and long term involvement in sport over the course of their life. vThis philosophy sets out a vision for hockey in Canada that takes advantage of the history and culture of the game to increase participation and to lay the foundation of success long into the future.

- Technical Development - Teaching physical literacy and sport specific skills at the correct time.
- Tactical Development - There are individual & team tactics, are you developing both? Do you know how to develop both?
- Physiological Development - Hereditary, chronological age & daily environment all play a factor. How does this affect development?
- Psychological Development - Mental, cognitive & emotional maturity. Do you fully understand the age level you are teaching?
Please follow the links to find out more on the LTPD plan and the 9 different stages.

SPMHA is pleased to offer several on and off ice programs that benefit players to improve their hockey development. These programs are funded through the December SPMHA Novice tournament and October’s SPMHA dance, without these fundraisers these programs could not operate.
TASZ will be working with players and coaches on and off ice in Player Development and Coach Development. TASZ Hockey believes the development and strengthening of fundamental skills allow all athletes to achieve their full potential both on and off the ice. Their highly qualified senior instructors come with high level coaching and skill development knowledge suitable for all ages and abilities. TASZ will be at Glenn Hall arena on Monday nights, on ice with teams for player development and to assist coaches with drills and practice plans. Coach participation on the ice is MANDATORY during these sessions. Coaches need to email Rob or Jeff at taszhockey@gmail.com a week before their teams scheduled time if they have some specific skills/drills they want TASZ to focus on; otherwise TASZ will have a practice plan set which follows Hockey Canada’s guidelines for that age group.
Gold in The Net is also offered Monday nights at Glen Hall arena throughout the season for goalies from Novice to Bantam. Gold in the Net has been offered for several years by SPMH to help develop our goalies on ice. SPMHA is pleased to offer this program for free to all our goalies. Please contact Glenna at admin@spmha.net to reserve your spot.
Stony dates for Gold in the Net, Oct 17, 24 Nov 7,21 Dec 5, 12 Jan 9,23 Feb 6, 27 630-730 at GH.
We have secured Chris Joseph and BASE Hockey for the Atom age groups and will be working with Atom coaches and players in the fundamentals of shooting. There will off ice with coaches and on ice with players. Teams and coaches will be notified of their times and dates. This program will be in mid- October. Atom coach participation on the ice is MANDATORY for these sessions. http://www.basehockey.ca/edmonton
P2 Power Skating, Tracy Pake will working with the Initiation teams with their young players on skating development. In any level or team wants to book power skating please contact Tracy. baronpake@tbwifi.ca 7809101052
This season we have changed how our Initiation Level players are introduced and developed in the early stages of hockey. Initiation games and practices will be played on split ice from this point forward. We have invested in the necessary resources to make this possible. This includes smaller nets and a portable board system to divide the ice.
WHAT DOES "HALF ICE GAME" MEAN TO YOUR CHILD?
LESS whistles stopping the play so, LESS standing around. MORE touches of the puck means MORE stickhandling and MORE passing and MORE shooting. This means MORE scoring chances. Half-ice games mean MORE ice-time so MORE skating and MORE changes in direction, for better agility.
- Goalies see MORE shots so MORE practice.
- Overall your kids have MORE FUN!
There is a picture of the boards set up on SPMH initiation page and pictures on the board cart to display how they are to be stored.
If there is any question, need some direction on board set up, contact Kevin Struik at initiationdir@spmha.net
